How to use free trials without getting charged

Updated · CancelCost
Applies to: US free trials billed by Apple App Store, Google Play, or the merchant’s own website. Brand-specific trial lengths are not listed here—read each signup screen.

In the US (as of 2026-10-18), free trials renew into paid plans unless you cancel on the platform that bills you. For Apple trials, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends (Apple Support: Cancel a subscription). For Google Play, open Subscriptions, select the trial, tap Cancel subscription—you keep access for time already covered (Google Play Help).

If the merchant bills you on their website, cancel in that account’s subscription settings and save the confirmation. Set a calendar reminder for the day before the trial ends when you are unsure.

Uninstalling an app does not cancel a store trial. Match the cancel path to the charge on your statement (APPLE.COM/BILL, GOOGLE *, or the company name).

A no-surprise free trial routine

Before and right after you start

  1. Read the trial length and the price it converts to on the signup screen.
  2. Note who bills you: Apple, Google Play, or the merchant’s website.
  3. Open that platform’s subscription page the same day; note if cancel keeps access to the trial end date.

If Apple bills the trial

  1. Open Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
  2. Select the trial and tap Cancel Subscription or Cancel Free Trial.
  3. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends (Apple Support).

If Google Play bills the trial

  1. Open Google Play Subscriptions, select the trial, tap Cancel subscription.
  2. Follow the prompts. Uninstalling the app does not cancel (Google Play Help).

If the merchant’s website bills you

  1. Sign in on the merchant site and open account / billing / subscription settings.
  2. Cancel or turn off auto-renew, then save the confirmation email or screenshot.

How to confirm it worked

You're done when:

  • The store or merchant page shows an end/expiration date and no further renewal.
  • You have a screenshot or email confirmation.
  • Your calendar reminder for the day before trial end is cleared because cancel is already done (or still set if you must wait).

Common problems

  • Deleted the app only. Apple and Google Play billing continue until you cancel in Subscriptions (Google Play Help; Apple Support).
  • Cancelled on the wrong platform. APPLE.COM/BILL charges cancel with Apple; GOOGLE * with Google Play; company-name charges on the merchant site.
  • Waited until the last hour on Apple. Apple Support: cancel trial renewals at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

What we checked

Verified on official Apple and Google Help (October 18, 2026): device/web cancel paths and “cancel trial at least 24 hours before the trial ends” on Apple Support HT118428; Google Play cancel steps, keep access for time paid, and uninstall-does-not-cancel on Google Play Help.

Left out: brand-specific trial lengths and conversion prices (vary by merchant; read each signup screen); claims that every merchant keeps access after cancel.

Calendar backup

If the cancel screen says access ends immediately, set a phone calendar alert for one day before the trial end date, then cancel when the alert fires.

If the trial already charged you

Cancel now so the next period does not renew, then use the store or merchant refund flow quickly. See how to get a subscription refund.

Find forgotten trials

Scan card statements and find all your subscriptions for APPLE.COM/BILL, GOOGLE * and merchant names.

Frequently asked questions

Does cancelling an Apple trial end access today?

It depends on the subscription. Apple Support’s cancel page covers device steps; cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends if you do not want it to renew.

Does Google Play keep the trial after I cancel?

Google Play Help: when you cancel, you can still use the subscription for the time you already paid.

Is uninstalling enough?

No. Google Play Help states uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Apple billing also continues until you cancel in Subscriptions.
