In the US (as of 2026-10-18), DigitalOcean Droplet pricing starts at $4/month for the smallest Basic Droplet, with per-second billing (60-second / $0.01 minimum). App Platform has a free static tier and paid containers from about $5/month. There is no single flat "subscription" - stop billing by destroying resources, then optionally close the account (DigitalOcean Docs: cancel account — Confirm current Docs path).

Leaving a Droplet powered on continues charges. Snapshots and unused volumes can also bill.

Team owner required to close an account. Export data and DNS first.

How to cancel DigitalOcean

Stop resource billing

  1. Sign in at cloud.digitalocean.com.
  2. Destroy Droplets, Apps, databases, load balancers, and unused volumes/snapshots you no longer need.
  3. Confirm Billing shows no active paid resources.
  4. Optionally close the team/account in Settings if you are done entirely.

How to confirm it worked

You're done when:

  • No active billable resources remain.
  • Account closed (if you chose to) and no new DigitalOcean invoice lines appear.

Common problems

  • Only powered off a Droplet. Some resources may still reserve/bill - destroy to be sure.
  • Left snapshots or volumes. Those can keep billing.
  • Closed account with resources still running. Clean resources first.
  • Team member without owner role tried to close the account.

What we checked
